Mechanical and thermal processing as well as ferritic contaminants make stainless steel susceptible to corrosion. Stainless steel pickling reliably removes these corrosion-prone elements.
Pickling allows the removal of tempering colours or foreign rust, thus preventing corrosion. The treated components are no longer subject to the destructive effects of oxidation. The corrosion-resistant passive layer of the stainless steel can only form on a clean, bare metal surface.

Maximum individual weight of the item to be pickled: 6.3 t
Stainless steel parts can be pickled at K industries-ALTHAMMER in an acid solution by complete immersion with a component size of up to 2 m x 2 m in cross-section and a length of 12 m. After pickling, the loosened surface scale is removed by means of high-pressure cleaning with water so that optimal passive layer formation in ensured. The maximum individual weight of the item to be pickled is 6.3 t.
Requirements for the items to be pickled
- Surface
The items for pickling must be delivered free of oil, grease and dirt. If the surface is contaminated, the acid cannot take effect uniformly, which will without exception produce an uneven appearance. Heavy abrasion on the surface due to tooling or foreign particles cannot be removed by pickling. It may be necessary to perform a mechanical pretreatment of the item to be pickled, e.g. through grinding, brushing or blasting.
- Structural design
The components must be designed so that they are suitable for pickling:
An open design so that proper pickling and high-pressure cleaning of the entire interior and exterior surface is possible. The cavities must have sufficiently large openings for acid and flushing water. There should be no narrow gaps or cavities from which residual acid cannot be thoroughly flushed out.
If these conditions are not met, it is possible for spots to form due to the slowly escaping residual acids and reaction products, which can be a detriment to the appearance.
- Visual appearance
The pickling does generally not lead to a visual improvement of the appearance!
Depending on the condition of the surface, pickling can cause the formation of shadows or spots on the surface. Experience has shown that smooth, clean surfaces have a better appearance after pickling than do rough, dirty surfaces. If there are special requirements for the surface appearance, then consultation concerning the feasibility beforehand is a must.
K industries-ALTHAMMER produces milled parts directly according to customer specifications and agreements. When doing so, the programming is carried out according to your drawings or sketches, regardless of whether for individual or series parts. All common CAD formats are supported.
